Regina King Joins ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’

According to Deadline, Regina King (Ray) is set to join Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins’ (Moonlight) next film If Beale Street Could Talk. Already in the cast are Stephan James (Selma), Colman Domingo (Birth of a Nation), and newcomer KiKi Layne.

Adapted from James Baldwin’s novel, it is a love story in the face of injustice. Young lovers Tish (Layne) and Fonny (James) are engaged to be married, but Fonny is then falsely accused of a terrible crime and imprisoned. Their families race against time to clear his name. Meanwhile, Tish is pregnant with the couple’s first child. Domingo will play Tish’s father. King will play a key role, which has not yet been specified.

Jenkins’ shingle PASTEL is producing and reteams Moonlight‘s producers from Brad Pitt’s company Plan B alongside Annapurna, which is financing.

King won two Emmy Awards in a row (2015, 2016) for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for ABC’s American Crime. The actress-director recently helmed upcoming episodes of NBC’s This is Us, and Showtime’s Shameless.

Shooting on Beale Street is currently underway.
