Brits Rebecca Hall (The Town) and Dan Stevens (The Guest) have snagged the leads in Permission, a new romantic comedy written and directed by Brian Crano. Set to start shooting shortly in Brooklyn, the films centers around a committed couple toying with the idea of sleeping with other people for the betterment of their relationship.
Anna (Hall) and Will (Stevens) appear to be soulmates and have been each others “first” everything from kiss to committed relationship. As an immanent engagement approaches, the couple’s friends insecurity and possible bitterness arises in a drunken toast that sparks Anna and Will to experiment with the idea of sleeping with other people. The ensemble cast includes Gina Gershon, Francois Arnaud, Morgan Spector, Bridget Everett, David Joseph Craig, Jason Sudeikis and Hall’s Please Give co-star Sarah Steele. In an interesting note, Hall and Stevens previously worked together on the stage in a revival of the Shakespeare classic As You Like It.
Hall, known best for roles in The Town, Iron Man 3 and her Golden Globe nominated performance in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, was most recently seen in the sleeper thriller The Gift. She will next appear in Steven Spielberg’s The BFG and has The Dinner (Owen Moverman’s drama starring Laura Linney and Richard Gere) and State Like Sleep (starring Michael Shannon and Ben Foster) in the pipeline. Currently, she’s wowing Sundance with an acclaimed performance in Christine, a bio of news reporter Christine Chubbuck, a Florida news reporter who committed suicide on the air.
Stevens came to prominence as Matthew Crowley on Downton Abbey, made a startling impression with his performance in the 2014 thriller The Guest and will soon appear alongside Anne Hathaway in the science fiction hybrid Colossal. He will also portray the Beast opposite Emma Watson (Noah) in Disney’s live-action reboot of Beauty in the Beast due in theaters in 2017.
