‘Ready Player One’ Reaches $300M at Box Office; A First for Spielberg since 2011

According to The Hollywood ReporterSteven Spielberg‘s film Ready Player One, first released in the U.S. on March 11, 2018 at the South by Southwest Film Festival, has reached $300 million in worldwide box offices on Friday, April 6, 2018. A Spielberg flick has not reached this milestone since 2011 with his release of  The Adventures of Tintin which grossed a total of $374 million. Ready Player One has reached this amount within just its first weeks of worldwide release.

The video game/virtual reality-themed film is most popular in China where it has earned $143 million, making it the “top-grossing Warners title in history in the Middle Kingdom.” In the U.S., the film has grossed $71.9 million, a much smaller sum than the total foreign grossing of $228 million.

The film is based on the best-selling Ernest Cline novel of the same name and stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Mark Rylance, Lena Waithe, and many more.

The film has scored 79% on Rotten Tomatoes and is currently “certified fresh.”
