‘Ready Player One’ Looks to Overcome ‘Pacific Rim’ at the Box Office

Spielberg’s latest thriller based on virtual reality games, Ready Player One, is closing in on the top spot at the box office with an estimated $53 million.  This is after its Thursday previews topped with $17 million, knocking Universal’s Pacific Rim to number 5 as the other new movie that came out this weekend; Lionsgate’s Acrimony is set to take 2 with just over $7 million.

That also bumps Black Panther, which had stayed at the top of the box office for 7 consecutive weeks to number 3 with another $11 million as the religious film, I Can Only Imagine, which over-performed expectations as it is expected to bring in a solid $10 million this weekend, but brought its total up to an impressive $50 million.

Other timely Easter films currently out include Sony-Affirm’s Paul, Apostle of Christ which is expected to bring in roughly $3.5 million as well as the latest release of the God’s Not Dead franchise, A Light In Darkness which is expected to open with over $3 million at 1693 theaters.
