Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the global rights to Randall Park’s directorial debut Shortcomings (2023), with the screenplay by Adrian Tomine and based on his graphic novel of the same name. The film premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2023.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Park described the film as “three Bay Area urbanites living life making mistakes trying to grow from those mistakes.” Ben (Justin H. Min) struggles with his filmmaking career in Berkeley, California, and his interest in other women when his girlfriend, Miko (Ally Maki) leaves for an internship in New York.
It also stars Sherry Cola, Tavi Gevinson, Debby Ryan, Sonoya Mizuno, Timothy Simons, Jacob Batalon, and Theo Iyer.
Sony Classics Pictures said, “Randall Park’s Shortcomings is as relevant today as when Adrian Tomine’s book was first published almost 20 years ago. Its modern ideas about racial and sexual politics, its caustic humor, and authentic voice will resonate with today’s moviegoing audience.
