Oscar-nominated director Emerald Fennell is taking a different kind of gig. The director of Promising Young Woman is set to write the adaptation of Zatanna of DC Comics. J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing through his deal with WarnerMedia.
The news of Fennel’s new projects comes after coming in hot with her directorial debut of Promising Young Womanduring award season. Along with five Oscar nominations including best picture, screenplay and Carey Mulligan getting animation for best actress, the movie gained attention from the Golden Globes, BAFTA, Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild.
This film will be Zatanna’s first franchise appearance, she is known for her involvement with the Justice League but has never appeared in a DC movie. Serinda Swan portrayed Zatanna in The CW’s Smallville, making it the superhero’s live action debut. The role of Zatanna in the film has not be casted.
Zatanna is a magician and considered to be one of the most powerful sorcerers in the DC universe, her powers are genetic as her father is Giovanni Zatara an alchemist.
Zatanna will be the second female DC hero to get a film following Wonder Woman and its sequel Wonder Woman 1984.
Although the date is unknown, the film will be released in theaters.
