Who hasn’t seen John Carpenter’s 1978 classic Halloween? Not many, as it is one of the horror genre’s biggest and longest franchises to date. The franchise consists of eleven films, along with novels, comics, and huge amount of merchandise. The most recent film was David Gordon Green‘s 2018 Halloween, and now two more sequels are in the works, beginning with Green’s Halloween Kills, which is said to be released in 2021. Following right after is Halloween Ends. Many fans, myself included, are curious if these next films are a farewell to the franchise.
According to Cinema Blend, the producer of the 2018 film and the upcoming sequels Ryan Freimann stated: “I have not thought that far ahead” and that, “…it’s like we’re living in the moment with these films that are successful, and we’ll see where it goes from there. I hope there is a theatrical experience. The future is still in place, but for right now, yes.” Freimann seems to know as much as Halloween fans, and isn’t giving a definite answer, perhaps because there isn’t one.
So what’s the conclusion? Horror franchises never seem to really end, so it is difficult to know if Halloween is really coming to its final completion. The Child’s Play saga had huge remake just last year and the original director is creating a new series for SYFY in 2021. Scream is releasing the 5th film in their franchise in 2022: The horror film franchise list goes on and on. Some fans are wishing for an ending to Laurie Strode’s adventure, and hoping she gets the closure she deserves, while others aren’t quite ready to let go of such a special franchise. The final film is called Halloween Ends, so it could possibly be the last film… for now.
