Prequel to ‘Master and Commander’ in the Works With ‘Chaos Walking’ Writer Patrick Ness

Ever wonder what happened before Master and Commander that brought together Captain Jack Aubrey and Dr. Stephen Maturin? Well, moviegoers better grab some swords because we are getting a prequel!

Deadline has confirmed that 20th Century Studios is in development of prequel to Master and Commander with Chaos Walking writer Patrick Ness. Ness is best known for writing the script for A Monster Calls and creating the Chaos Walking series.

Insiders also told Deadline that it is still in the early stages of development and that no director or cast members are currently attached. So while there is a script, there is also a possibility that the film could sink to the bottom of the ocean.

Peter Weir’s 2003 film Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is set during the Napoleonic Wars and follows Capt. Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe), a headstrong British Captain who pushes his ship and crew to their limits to pursue a fearsome French war vessel throughout South America. The film grossed over $200 million worldwide and garnered 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.

Fun fact: Master and Commander was initially intended to be a film franchise with a new installment for each book; however, those plans were thrown out due to low box office. Despite $200 million worldwide and a lot of nominations, the budget for the film was $150 million plus advertisements, and never got a sequel.

Ness has recently finished the script to adapt the 1954 novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding for Warner Bros. and director Luca Guadagnino.

I did attend Long Beach City College for a couple of years, I then transferred to CSULB in 2019. I want to write something outside the normal, something no one would think to write about in a unique way. It also shows how far I am willing to go to produce something amazing that will get more readers interested in the world of Journalism. I am on my way to making a professional life for myself.
