It’s been quite a long journey for the marketing campaign of Warner Bros.’s and Legendary Pictures’s upcoming Godzilla. With a teaser and two trailers already hitting several million views on YouTube, the new “Extended Look” trailer (below), released yesterday through the movie’s YouTube channel, seems to reveal more plot elements.
Boldly revealing more plot information upon which was only hinted in brief montages in past trailers, this trailer shows things get personal for Bryan Cranston’s Joe Brody. The power plant where he and his wife Sandra (Juliette Binoche) work appears to collapse, resulting in Sandra being trapped inside and likely dead. Joe’s angry accusations and demands for answers now hold more personal weight. As to the fate of Joe and the rest of the principal characters (among which are played by Aaron Tayl0r-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Sally Hawkins, Ken Watanabe, and David Strathairn), it looks like we’ll have to wait until May 16 to find out.
Though perhaps too early to tell, the brief shots of a volcano and power plant situated in the same setting may suggest the film takes place in Japan at one point. San Francisco is most likely another main setting, given the imagery of iconic monuments such as the Transamerica Pyramid Center in one of the posters (below) and the past teaser.
A final shot of a staggering, roaring Godzilla also gives audiences a clearer idea of director Gareth Edwards’ new vision for the legendary king of monsters.
