Pixar’s Upcoming Adventure ‘Elio’ Shifts Gears With New Directors And A Fresh Direction

Pixar’s Elio, originally slated for a March 2024 release, has undergone significant changes in both its creative leadership and storytelling approach, setting a new tone for the upcoming animated space adventure. The film is now directed by Turning Red’s (2022) Domee Shi and writer Madeline Sharafian. Elio is now scheduled for a theatrical release on June 13, 2025.

The story follows 11-year-old Elio Solis, voiced by child voice actor Yonas Kibreab, a space-obsessed boy who accidentally becomes Earth’s ambassador after being beamed into an intergalactic organization known as the Communiverse. The voice cast also includes She Hulk (2022) co-star Jameela Jamil, Saturday Night (2024) actor Brad Garrett, and Guardians Of The Galaxy star Zoe Saldaña, who replaced America Ferrera, who played Gloria in Barbie (2024), as Elio’s caretaker in a reimagined role as his aunt. The latest trailer highlights Elio’s quirky and energetic personality, contrasting with the more serious tone of the film’s original iteration.

This tonal shift reflects Shi and Sharafian’s influence, blending the heartfelt storytelling of Turning Red with a modern, playful energy. The updated trailer showcases vivid alien worlds, humorous moments, and a contemporary aesthetic that includes smartphones and wireless earphones, positioning Elio as a vibrant departure from Pixar’s usual fare.

Originally introduced in 2022, Elio has faced delays and adjustments, but its creative evolution promises a fresh take on intergalactic adventures. With a narrative that balances humor, heart, and spectacle, Elio is poised to captivate audiences when it hits theaters next summer.
