Pixar’s Coco will make its world premiere on October 20th at Mexico’s Morelia International Film Festival, a fitting venue for the Mexico-set Day of the Dead-themed animated feature. The festival is set to run from October 20 to October 29. Competition titles will be announced later.
Academy Award-winning director Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3) and Adrian Molina (Monsters University) co-helm from a script they co-wrote. They researched for the film by visiting the colonial city of Morelia. Molina said, “”Coco is the first Pixar movie inspired by the lovely people, the beautiful traditions and the culture of Mexico, so we are honored to have the opportunity to launch it there first.”
Coco is about a 12 year old boy named Miguel (voiced by newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) whose fantasy is to become a musician like his hero Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt). However, for mysterious reasons, Miguel’s family has banned music for the last century. Miguel takes an adventure-filled journey to the Land of he Dead to get to the bottom of his family’s history accompanied by a charming trickster named Hector (Gael García Bernal). Also in the voice cast are Edward James Olmos (Americano) and Alanna Ubach (Meet the Fockers).
Coco will have its U.S. theatrical release date on November 22nd.
