The MeToo movement has done a lot of good. It has brought more public awareness to harassment, taken power away from corrupt predators, and hopefully it allowed victims to get the help they need. MeToo has also forced Hollywood to be more self aware about their movies.
In the wake of the MeToo movement and the release of Toy Story 4, Pixar has decided to retroactively remove rather suggestive scene from Toy Story 2. The scene in question was part of the fake bloopers that appeared during the credits of Toy Story 2, and removing it from the movie has no impact on the plot. In the scene the character of Stinky Pete, who was voiced by Kelsey Grammar, is talking to two Barbie dolls about how he can get them roles in the next Toy Story movie. Pete’s remark are very reminiscent of the infamous ‘casting couch’ in which a powerful (often male) person in Hollywood manipulates a young impressionable person (often female) into having sex with them and in exchange for some career advancement.
Considering that the director of Toy Story 2, John Lasseter, was accused of sexual harassment this scene does come across as very tasteless. Lassester has since stepped down from his position at Pixar, but his legacy still lingers and he has not completely left the industry.
The scene will no longer be in future copies of Toy Story 2 and it cannot be viewed on streaming version of the movie, but it of course will remain on any original VHS copies or DVDs. Plus the internet being what it is finding the scene online is pretty easy.
