Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, the sequel to Sony’s 2018 family live-action/animated adventure film, is officially hopping to fourth of July weekend, and is now set to release July 2. This delay comes two weeks after the film was moved up from June 11 to May 14.
The sequel’s cast includes big names like Rose Byrne, Domnhall Gleeson, David Oyelowo, Elizabeth Debicki, Margot Robbie and James Corden. Audiences will follow the titular Peter Rabbit once again as he runs away to the big city, causing chaos for the whole family.
The film will release alongside Paramount’s long-awaited Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. The first Peter Rabbit released back in 2018 and earned a whopping $351 million worldwide. Will Gluck is returning to direct and co-write the sequel with Patrick Burleigh. Gluck is also known for the 2014 remake of Annie, which starred Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhané Wallis, and the 2011 rom-com, Friends with Benefits, which starred Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis.
The delay could be a strategic decision rather than a completely necessary one. Holiday weekends are usually quite big for ticket sales and, due to theaters around the country slowly starting to open back up, the weekend of the fourth could prove to be profitable for the Peter Rabbit sequel.
