Multiple outlets are reporting that Peter Lamont, the Oscar Winning production designer for Titanic has passed away at the age of 91. He also had a hand in designs for the 1986 film Aliens, 1977’s The Spy Who Loved Me, and the 1971 musical Fiddler on the Roof, which all netted Lamont Oscar nominations for his work.
Though in addition to his award worthy designs, he also helped create the worlds for a plethora of Bond films. Bonds including Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig. Even in his early days he worked on Sean Connery’s Goldfinger. The last Bond film Lamont worked on was Casino Royale in 2006. Overall, his legacy in the Bond franchise will not soon be forgotten.
The sad news was confirmed on the James Bond twitter account early today.
Cinema is a magnificent art form and the job of the production designer is one of the most important parts in creating a world. Lamont truly did that during his robust career. A quick glance of his resume proves his influence on cinema with all his work on classic films.
Lamont’s work is nearly always taken in by the audiences, though his name is not always seen. He is an important part of many wonderful cinema worlds. He is survived by his son Neil and his granddaughter Ashley, both working on the art design in films. Our condolences to his family and friends.
