A24’s ‘The Green Knight’ Gets A Release Date

After extensive uncertainty, likening to most events this year, A24’s film The Green Knight starring Dev Patel and Alicia Vikander, is now scheduled for a July 30, 2021 release date. The medieval psychological retelling of the classic Arthurian tale was originally scheduled for a summer 2020 date, but was pushed back indefinitely due to the ongoing pandemic. Now with vaccine distribution underway in the UK and US, A24 feels confident in scheduling a release date for this anticipated film.

David Lowery is directing the film, he previously made A Ghost Story and is set to direct Disney’s Peter Pan & Wendy, which was recently announced at the Disney investor day last week. Lowery also directed Robert Redford’s final leading performance in The Old Man & the Gun. Judging by the flavor Lowery brings a clear new vision to this old tale.

The original source material entitled Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a fascinating medieval tale. It follows Knight Gawain and his eventual meeting between an unwelcome visitor to a feast. It has twists, turns, and head rolls all abound. The source material is a fantastic read for those interested in medieval literature.

Based on the trailer itself, there is clear inspiration drawn from the text, and it can be assumed that the psychological turmoil that Gawain goes through in the original text after his meeting with the Green Knight will be expanded upon. The trailer truly looks fantastic. But what’s new for A24?

The Green Knight is set for a July 30, 2021 release date.
