Peter Jackson to Direct WWI Documentary

Fresh from the completion of the Hobbit Trilogy and Mortal Engines, Peter Jackson will direct a documentary about World War I.

Timed with the war’s centenary, the yet to be titled documentary will include restored footage from the early 1900’s from what is considered the deadliest war of all time.

Jackson says longtime fascination with World War I was “…due to my own family history and the Centenary felt like a unique opportunity to make a personal contribution to the commemoration,”

According to Empire, “Using exclusive archive footage drawn from the libraries of both the Imperial War Museum and the BBC, he’ll also be hand-colorizing and 3D digitize the results, restoring never-before-seen material with modern techniques.”

The company is also planning a “making of” video after the movie restoration is complete. With Jackson’s particular penchant for war and war themes, this should be a subject right up his alley. Jackson’s Mortal Engines is due out this year on December 14, and will feature a fictionalized war-torn world.
