Penélope Cruz to Reteam with Pedro Almodóvar for Sony Pictures Classics’ ‘Parallel Mothers’

Pedro Almodóvar, one of the most renowned Spanish directors working today, is reteaming with Penélope Cruz for new film titled, Parallel Mothers, which has been acquired by Sony Pictures Classics. Fellow collaborators Rossy de Palma and Julieta Serrano will also star in the film alongside Cruz.

The film is a drama which centers on three mothers, played by Cruz, Aitana Sánchez Gijón and Milena Smit. Many of Almodóvar’s previous films have focused on women, particularly mothers, and his newest film looks to turn his focus on imperfect mothers.

Almodóvar previously worked with Sony Pictures Classics on his recent short film, The Human Voice, which starred Tilda Swinton and played alongside digitally restored version of the director’s 1988 film, Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. The new short will be available to stream on HBO Max starting April 30.

This will mark the fifth film of Almodóvar’s that Cruz is starring in. Their previous films together include Pain and Glory, All About my Mother, Volver and Live Flesh.

The director has received an abundance of awards during his career, earning a best foreign-language film Oscar for All About My Mother, and an Oscar for best original screenplay for his film Talk to Her.
