In recent interviews with the Financial Times and Variety, famed Spanish director Pedro Almodovar spoke about his next project Silencio. Almodovar looks to continue his streak of telling compelling female stories through the Spanish language. He revealed little about the storyline except the way in which the title provides motive, as “silencio” is “the principal element that drives the worst things that happen to the main female protagonist.”
Almodovar has built his film career around the stories of strong, complex women with such films as The Flower of My Secret, 1999’s Oscar-winning All About My Mother, and 2006’s Oscar-nominated Volver. He has also built himself a circle of go-to female actresses, most notably Marisa Paredes and Penelope Cruz. The casting for Silencio, however, will be a challenge, he revealed, as “what [he’s] written doesn’t quite work with [his] actores amigos,” or actor friends.
Silencio will be funded by the director’s brother Agustin Almodovar under their production company El Deseo, and will begin filming this coming April.
In the meantime, Almodovar will continue supporting Wild Tales, the Argentinian film under his El Deseo banner which has already won the top prize at Argentina’s Academy Awards and has passed the first phase in the Foreign Language Oscar race.
