According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros has already hired a new director for Wonder Woman: Patty Jenkins, who was previously set to direct Thor: The Dark World. This news comes two days after Michelle MacLaren exited the project over creative differences.
Jenkins’ debut feature was Monster, starring Charlize Theron in an Oscar-winning role. She also directed the pilot episode of the AMC series The Killing.
Warner Bros. had come under fire over MacLaren’s departure, since female directors, already uncommon within tentpole film franchises, have not had any opportunity to direct a big-budget superhero film. Considering Wonder Woman’s status as the most famous superheroine and the first female lead in the current Marvel and DC cinematic universes, having a female director helm the project seems appropriate. Jenkins would have been the first woman to direct a major superhero movie with Thor: The Dark World, and she will now have a second chance as the new director of Wonder Woman.
Wonder Woman is still scheduled for release in 2017. While a change in director presents a significant obstacle to any production, Warner Bros. did manage to fill the position quickly and may have avoided any major delays.
