Famous South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun was found dead at 48 in his car on Wednesday morning, local time. Known for his work in the movie Parasite and Apple + show Doctor Brain, Lee had been under investigation by the police due to allegations of drug use.
According to South Korean news outlet Yonhap, Lee’s wife contacted the police after the actor had left that day and left behind an alleged suicide note. While no cause of death has been given, Lee’s surviving family refused to allow an autopsy for the actor and plans on burying him on Friday.
Lee had been under scrutiny ever since he was accused of alleged drug use while traveling out to Seoul’s Gangnam district. Since then, he had been questioned three times by the police, one line of questioning allegedly lasting well over 19 hours. When asked, Lee claimed that a bar hostess tricked him into taking drugs and was blackmailed afterward. The hostess, on the other hand, alleged that Lee allegedly used drugs out of his own free will multiple times at her house.
Either way, these investigations had caused his reputation as an actor to tank. Since celebrities were held to a higher degree of scrutiny and the current president, Yoon Suk Yeol, called for a total war against drugs, Lee’s opportunities began to dry up. For instance, he was dropped from the mystery series No Way Out, which started shooting in October, prompting some stores to pull down all posters containing his likeness.
The actor made a statement regarding the situation, apologizing for “causing great disappointment to many people by being involved in such an unpleasant incident.” “I feel sorry for my family, which is enduring such difficult pain at this moment,” the actor mused.
Lee is survived by his actress wife, Jeon Hye-jin, and their two sons.
