Paramount’s new movie Sonic the Hedgehog was redesigned at $5 million or less. This adaptation of the famous Sega video game character follows the little blue hedgehog, voiced by Ben Schwartz, as he teams up with man named Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) to help prevent the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from taking over the world by using Sonic’s powers. However, the film’s April trailer saw intense criticism from fans on Sonic’s look, deeming it too creepy and realistic.
The backlash to Sonic’s design was so severe that director Jeff Fowler announced on Twitter that the film would be delayed three months for redesigning.
Last week, Paramount released a new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog, whose design more closely resembled the character than shown initially. Sonic’s look is now much similar to his video game counterpart, finally delivering his appearance justice even if we don’t know how the film itself will turn out.
According to Indiewire, it’s estimated that Paramount spent less than $5 million to redesign Sonic. Furthermore, “the VFX work on the film was far from completed by the time the decision was made to delay the film and redesign Sonic,” adding that, “the only Sonic VFX that were fully completed were reportedly the ones seen in the first trailer.” Soon after, Fowler took to Twitter to thank fans for their remarks as they look ahead to the film’s release.
