Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins will be reuniting with the wonder woman herself, Gal Gadot, in the period biographical drama, Cleopatra. According to Deadline, the film is the first major project package won by Paramount Motion Picture Group President Emma Watts in an auction against Universal, Warner Bros, Netflix and Apple.
Cleopatra will be written by Laeta Kalogridis, who previously worked on the scripts for Alita: Battle Angel, Terminator Genisys, and Shutter Island. Although the character of Cleopatra has been played as a seductress in the past, the new biopic looks to tell an epic story of female empowerment based on the research done by Kalogridis after being recruited by Gadot.
The film will also be the third collaboration between Gadot and Jenkins after their work together on the Wonder Woman franchise. The first Wonder Woman film received high praise from critics and audiences on its release in 2017, and the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, is set to be released later this year.
In early September, Wonder Woman 1984 was delayed from its original release date of October 2, to December 25. The delay is one of many that the industry has seen over the last few months due to the uncertainty that studios face when releasing a major film in theaters during the COVID-19 pandemic.
