Paramount Picks Up ‘The Batman’ Screenwriter Mattson Tomlin’s Sci-Fi Film ‘2084’

Paramount has acquired rights to Mattson Tomlin‘s original spec script of the sci-fi tale 2084Lorenzo di Bonaventura, best known for producing franchise entries like the Transformers and G.I. Joe movies, will produce the project.

2084 had stirred a lot of interest from filmmakers and studios eager to get involved with the feature project, with Paramount coming out on top from the competitive bid. The film takes place in an authoritarian society that rose from the ashes of global destruction and where people’s lives are controlled down to the smallest detail. It follows a young pair who becomes entangled in a forbidden love that leads each one to start a rebel movement. 2084 is reportedly similar to George Orwell’s novel 1984, which also centers around a big-brother totalitarian society, but has also been described to have similar tones to Christopher Nolan’s Inception and The Matrix.

Tomlin wrote, directed, shot, edited and co-composed the score for his independent thriller The Projectionist. He also co-wrote the upcoming Warner Bros.’ The Batman that stars Robert Pattinson. He currently is working on a movie adaptation of the video game Mega Man, as well as an adaptation the comic Fear Agent for Amazon.

Di Bonaventura is no stranger to working with top sci-fi films, having ushered The Matrix into production while he was the head of film at Warner Bros. He is currently working in postproduction on Infinite, a time-bending action film starring Mark Wahlberg.
