After twenty-six years, it looks like Sonic the Hedgehog will get his very own feature film! Though he was first introduced in a massively popular video game series, the titular character and his friends have also appeared in multiple television shows too.
Housed at Paramount, the film has transitioned from its original placement at Sony. The decision is understandable: the movie’s production sounds like gamble, as it does not devote itself fully to animation, which may pose problems; instead, it will work with both CGI and live actors. Currently there is no specific plot advertised for the film beyond a conflict with Doctor Eggman.
However, it is a strange concept to blend computer graphics with live action, which often tends to look uncanny in films centering around both human and animal characters (such as the early 2000’s Scooby Doo series and the many Alvin and the Chipmunks movies). The choice of executive producer Tim Miller also adds another layer of tonal confusion. Known for directing Deadpool, Miller will also be signed on for an untitled Terminator reboot, as well as this Sonic the Hedgehog project.
Nonetheless, the film is still in production and its quality cannot be judged from sheer speculation alone. Additionally, while the film will certainly attempt to draw in adults born in the eighties and nineties from nostalgia, it may be aimed towards a younger audience anyways, who won’t be so concerned with realistic graphics.
The film will be released in 2019.
