Last week, Rachel Zegler revealed that she has not received an invitation to The Oscars, despite being the star of the seven-time nominee West Side Story. After an internet firestorm, the 20-year-old actress has now been offered a spot in the show as a presenter. The actress is currently shooting in London for Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White and The Hollywood Reporter states that there are efforts being made to rearrange the film’s shooting schedule so the star can attend the ceremony.
On Sunday, Zegler posted a series of images on her personal Instagram account along with the caption “a quarter of the year well spent.” In the comments section, a user wrote: “Can’t wait to see what you’ll be wearing on Oscar night.” Zegler responded, writing: “I’m not invited so sweatpants and my boyfriend’s flannel.”
This response led to outrage on social media including comments made by the co-creator of One Day At A Time Gloria Calderon Kellett and the original West Side Story star Russ Tamblyn. Strangely enough, nonindustry types such as Tony Hawk and Shaun White have been asked to present over the leading lady and public face of the best picture Oscar nominee.
Since the news broke, Zegler has taken to social media to express her gratitude towards her fans for their support. “my goodness, folks!! appreciate all the support, I really really do. we live in such unprecedented times, and a lot of work behind the scenes goes into making movie magic happen. that goes for film productions (like the one I am so lucky to be currently shooting in London) and awards shows alike. Let’s all just respect the process and I’ll get off my phone.”
