Oscar Winning Costume Designer Anthony Powell Dies at 85

It was sadly announced earlier today that beloved costume designer, Anthony Powell, passed away on April 16th. According to Variety Powell was 85 years old at the time of death. Anthony Powell is survived by his two nieces.

Powell had a very extensive and interesting career. During his life he worked on many different well known and beloved movies. As a designer he helped dress iconic movie character like adventurer Indiana Jones and fur obsessed villainess Cruella de Vil.

Some of his movie credits include Ishtar, Hook, Papillon, 101 Dalmatians, 102 Dalmatians, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and many more movies.

Over the course of his career Powell was nominated and won several costume design awards. He won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for his work on the movies Travels with My Aunt, Death on the Nile, and Tess. He was also nominated for the award for his work on Hook, Pirates, and 102 Dalmatians. Powell was also nominated for many different other awards.

Besides movies Powell also designed costumes for several different theater production. He was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Costume Design for his work on Sunset Boulevard, and he won a Tony Award for Best Costume Design for his designs for The School for Scandal.

While it is tragic that the world has lost such an amazing man, we can at least enjoy the incredible legacy that Anthony Powell left behind.
