Oscar Winner Aaron Sorkin Interested in Sequel to ‘The Social Network’

Oscar award-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin is interested in penning sequel to the 2010 film The Social Network.’

Sorkin confirmed this on the Happy.Sad.Confused podcast,’ saying, ““I do want to see [a sequel],” continuing to get into the interest by stating, “we’ve discovered is the dark side of Facebook.”

The original film, based on the book ‘The Accidental Billionaires’ by Ben Mezrich, saw young Mark Zuckerberg(Jesse Eisenberg) creating one of the first social networks that eventual became Facebook, in a meteoric rise for a Havard dropout. Filled with witty dialogue and a slew of lawsuits against the young man, the initial fim was a huge success. The film won Sorkin an Oscar, got two other wins, and a Best Picture nomination.

If Sorkin gets his wish, the sequel will play on the recent events surrounding Facebook. Recently, Zuckerberg and the social network have come under more fire due to the company not being able to stop misinformation from spreading like wildfire. Politics aside, many people see this misinformation and believe it to be true.

The sequel will be based on the book ‘Zucked: Waking Up to the Facebook Catastrophe’ by Roger McNamee. McNamee was an initial investor in Facebook at its inception. Following the years involved in Facebook, he became dissatisfied with the damage the social network had done to modern society.

Sorkin, who recently has taken a dive into directing with ‘Molly’s Game’ and The Trail of the Chicago 7’, is only interested in writing the script. He says that the only way he will write the script is “if David [Fincher] directs it.”

It is rare to see a sequel to a dramatic Oscar nominee from nearly a decade ago, though if Fincher and Sorkin return, it could be a movie to look out for. Especially because there is a lot more story following the rise of Zuckerberg.

Mezrich, the original book writer, tweeted it best saying, “I’ve always seen The Social Network as the start of a Marvel-style franchise. The Social Network is The Avengers.”
