The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Oscar Isaac has been cast as Solid Snake in Sony‘s video game adaptation, this adds another character to his robust career. This comes with the announcement that Sony will be making a Metal Gear Solid live action adaptation directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, who previously was at the helm of Kong: Skull Island and The Kings of Summer. The script will be penned by Kong: Skull Island scribe Derek Connolly. It is clear Sony will try to replicate the success of the action film. Both of Vogt-Roberts’ previous films received solid reviews and after the success of his Kong movie, it is clear that studios are eager to keep him directing blockbusters.
Oscar Isaac is one of the most prolific actors at the moment. Last year he finished his role in the new Star Wars trilogy, and now his career is not slowing down. He will star in Dune next year and it has been announced that he will lead the Marvel TV series Moon Knight. In addition he’s been cast as Francis Ford Coppola opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in Francis and the Godfather. Other stand out performances from the last decade include a disturbed husband in Annihilation and the deeply tormented singer-songwriter from Inside Llewyn Davis.
Isaac brings dramatic, comedic, and blockbuster chops to the role of Solid Snake, who initially appeared in the 1987 Metal Gear. The character has been a huge part of Sony’s and Metal Gear’s success over its three decade run. The character has appeared in a plethora of games from the franchise, but also the incredibly popular Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2018.
This union of an A list talent and an incredibly beloved character seems like a match made in heaven. Though, it is important to note that video games have a tough time transitioning into movies. Michael Fassbender felt was a perfect choice for Assassin’s Creed, but the movie was lackluster. Holland’s latest Uncharted film will come out before Metal Gear, so maybe this will begin a new age of video game adaptations.
With Isaac’s busy schedule it could be awhile until this film is underway. No release or production date has been announced.
