For Oscar Isaac‘s (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) latest venture, he will be teaming up with director Steven Spielberg for the religious drama The Kidnapping of Edgardo Montara, according to Variety. The film is already set to star Spielberg’s latest muse and Oscar-winner Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) with Isaac stepping into an unspecified role.
The drama will tell the story of a young boy in 1858 Bologna, Italy who, after being secretly baptized, is taken from his family to be raised as a Christian. In the search for their son, the family fights against the political strife occurring between the Papacy and the movements pushing democracy and Italian unification.
Tony Kushner (Lincoln) adapted the screenplay based on the novel by David Kertzer. Spielberg plans to begin production in the first quarter of 2017 after he wraps on Ready Player One (which also features Rylance in a pivotal role).
This won’t be Isaac’s first go around in the religious genre. He has previously starred in The Nativity Story as Joseph and in the Mexican religious uprising film For Greater Glory: The True Story of Cristiada. In a way, Isaac will be returning to some of his acting roots. Most recently, Isaac has built a working balance between acclaimed indie projects (Ex Machina, A Most Violent Year, Inside Llewyn Davis) and studio pictures (Star Wars, X-Men: Apocalypse). He recently won a Golden Globe for his work on the limited series Show Me a Hero. He will next be seen alongside Christian Bale in Terry George’s The Promise.
