Whenever a remake of a film is announced, many often wonder how the people behind the original project feel about it getting a remake. Thus, is the case with Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated Dune, a remake of the 1984 adaptation directed by David Lynch. It’s one of Lynch’s most recognizable, and most embarrassing films, in his filmography lineup, so it’s probably little surprise that in a recent interview, Lynch stated he has “Zero Interest” in the new Dune.
Some would assume that this reaction is due to David Lynch’s purest nature when it comes to revivals or remakes, which tends to be the case for most high profile filmmakers. However, it’s different with Lynch, who has cited production of 1984’s Dune as one of the worst experiences of his career. This is not surprisingly since Dune was filled with a ton of production issues and much of Lynch’s original vision being cut out due to creative differences with the studio, to the point Lynch wanted his name off the final cut of the film. Therefore, it seems he’d rather not even be reminded of Dune in any sort of way.
Fortunately for Lynch, Denis Villeneuve stated that his adaptation will differ gratefully. Villeneuve cited that Lynch’s adaptation has some great qualities and loves his work, but wanted to make his film the definitive Dune. “When I saw his adaptation, I was impressed, but it was not what I had dreamed of, so I’m trying to make the adaptation of my dreams”, Villenueve mentioned. With Villeneuve supposedly having more creative control, hopefully this new version of Dune will be true to the one in his dreams.
Dune is set for release December 18th 2020.
