Pixar released the first trailer for their first original project since 2017’s Coco during Thursday’s NBA Finals. Titled Onward, the 2 minute trailer tells a story of two elf brothers, played by Chris Pratt and Tom Holland, on a journey to find and spend one last day with their father.
The trailer showcases the basic concept of mythical creatures living in what appears to be a suburban setting. We see Goblins with security jobs, Mermaids with Cell Phones, and Gnomes mowing the lawn as the main elf, Ian Lightfoot (Holland), enters his home. He’s greeted by a dragon that doubles as a dog while his mom (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) tries to calm the family pet down. We then see Ian’s brother Barley (Pratt) greet him in a van boasting about their future adventure, distracting Ian from the unicorns eating their trash. The trailer ends with both brothers riding off on their “glorious quest” (Ian insists it’s just a errand), while set to the tune of 80’s music that one might find in a John Hughes movie.
This trailer gives off a classic teen movie vibe mixed with a Zootopia–like merging of modern day setting and fantastical elements. Much like other Pixar movies, Onward looks to provide a mix of heartfelt and incredibly funny moments. Chris Pratt stated that he cried upon hearing the first pitch and described Onward as “Funny and Imaginative.” With no new franchise sequels being announced anytime soon, Onward could be a start of Pixar’x return to original properties, and this trailer shows a lot of promise for the future.
Onward is set for release on March 6th 2020. Watch Full Trailer Below:
