Olivia Wilde to Direct Female Led Marvel Movie from SONY

After directing last year’s highly successful high school comedy Booksmart, actress Olivia Wilde is returning to the director’s chair this time for Marvel. Not many details have been shared yet, and we do know know if it will be a Spider-man film, but we do know it will be with a female lead, according to Deadline.

The main rumor at the moment is that it will be a Spider-Woman film, who in the comics was portrayed by various women including Gwen Stacy and M.J. Watson. Wilde is being handed  the reins for the project, so it is not yet known which direction the film will be taking.

This news follows an announcement earlier this year from Sony, who will be making a rumored Madame Webb film led by S.J. Clarkson. There is also a Black Cat and Silver Sable film in the works, meaning that a total of three women-led Spider-verse films are on the way from Marvel and Sony.

This project is making better progress than the other two already and now has writer Katie Silberman, producer Amy Pascal and executive producer Rachel O’Connor on board.

No release date has been revealed yet, or details on how this film will fit into the other Marvel and Sony films’ timelines.
