Universal Pictures is dusting off The Mummy and rebooted the venerable franchise for a new generation. The hope, of course, is to build a multi-film universe to showcase the classic monsters that helped build Universal into a motion picture powerhouse in the first place many moons ago. Earlier this week, the first teaser for The Mummy – now glossed with Tom Cruise in the leading role – was released. Now comes the official trailer.
And it looks a little like Cruise is still in Mission: Impossible mode as the trailer opens with a blistering plane crash and teases a heavy amount of stunt work – befitting a movie star known for his ability to perform dangerous stunts on his own. This The Mummy comes from Alex Kurtzman (scripter of the Transformers flicks and director of the family drama People Like Us) directs from a screenplay credited to Christopher McQuarrie (a Mission: Impossible vet) and Jon Spaihts (writer of the upcoming Passengers and the former Universal monster non-starter Van Helsing). The ensemble cast includes Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (recent Emmy winner for American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson) and Oscar winner Russell Crowe (The Nice Guys).
Check out the official trailer below. The Mummy hits theaters on June 9, 2017.
