Clouds of Sils Maria reunion! Writer-director Olivier Assayas appears to have found a muse in Kristen Stewart. The second collaboration between the duo comes in the form of Personal Shopper, an art-house thriller that premiered to acclaim (and few boos) at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. The film festival favorite – since premiering at Cannes, the film has traveled from the New York Film Festival, the London Film Festival and around the world – is nearing a U.S. release this spring, courtesy of IFC Films.
The genre-bursting title focuses on a disaffected young woman in Paris who works as a personal shopper to the high end crowd who chances upon an eerie connection with her twin brother, who just happens to be dead. Sharply, the film marks the second consecutive Assayas film to feature Stewart following their critically admired collaboration with Clouds of Sils Maria, a film which earned Stewart a coveted César Award (France’s equivalent to the Oscars); she became the first American woman to win a competitive prize.
Stewart, fresh from a hosting stint on Saturday Night Live, appeared on screen last in Ang Lee’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk as well as the admired indie Certain Women co-starring Michelle Williams and Laura Dern. Last year, she also appeared in Woody Allen’s Café Society and the science fiction romance Equals. Stewart recently completed work on the Lizzie Borden bio Lizzy and wrote and directed the short film Come Swim, which made its premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.
