In 2014, Warner Brothers’ Animation Group brought the surprise hit The LEGO Movie to theaters, which built its way into the hearts of audiences worldwide. Its first spin-off film, The LEGO Batman Movie, due out this Friday, is set to bring a lot of the same frenetic animation and witty comedy to parody the caped crusader’s legacy. Now, Warner Bros is gearing up for the third animated installment in the LEGO Cinematic Universe with The LEGO Ninjago Movie.
Based on the collection of building sets and 2011 Cartoon Network series, The LEGO Ninjago Movie stars Dave Franco as the fabled Green Ninja and Master Builder: Lloyd (or “L-Loyd” by his evil father, Lord Garmadon, played by Justin Theroux). Franco and Theroux are joined by Jackie Chan, Michael Peña, Olivia Munn, and Fred Armisen as fellow LEGO martial artists. The team of color-coded “Power Ranger-esque” ninja warriors are set to practice the art of “Spinjitsu” in adventurous cartoony fashion on September 22nd, 2017.
The film is the directorial debut of Charlie Bean, former writer and artist for various Cartoon Network series and episode director on Disney XD’s Tron: Uprising. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, directors of the original LEGO Movie, return as producers. Check out the trailer and poster below.
