After what can only be described as a harrowing experience for Studios and probably a bit of a wake-up call, October finally came to a close with some of the most concerning underperformances of the year, record low numbers, and is currently holding 2025’s worst weekend for the box office. In its sophomore outing, Regretting You took home first with $8.1 million, crawling up from its previous week’s position in third as it competed with Black Phone 2 and Chainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arc for round two. Black Phone 2 held on to second place again for this weekend with $8 million, trailing just slightly behind Regretting You. Chainsaw Man saw a much more significant drop with $6 million for a second outing, taking home third, but considering it’s an international release, the film is not at all hampered by a weaker domestic run, even compared to the same numbers the Demon Slayer movie saw at the start of the month but still enough to call a it another solid victory for anime.

Netflix had its second theatrical release of K-pop Demon Hunters this weekend as well, though numbers are unofficial third-party reports show that it may be around $6 million, putting it in a tie for third.

For its wider release, Bugonia shot up into the top 10, taking home fourth with $4.8 million. As a smaller production shooting for award season recognition, it’s standing on firmer footing.

The top five were rounded out by a re-release of Back to the Future, which saw $4.7 million showing once more theatrical re-releases of great films are in demand for the theater experience.

In its fourth weekend, dropping down to sixth, Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere brought home $3.8 million, followed by Tron: Ares with seventh place and $2.8 million, also in its fourth week. Eighth went to Good Fortune with $1.4 million in its third week, beating Roofman, which saw $1 million in its fourth week.

Tenth went to the newcomer, Baahubali: The Epic, another international film with eight hundred thirty-seven thousand dollars.

These numbers aren’t just bite size they’re also a reflection of a greater issue between timing, budgets, and audience demand in the way studios are not meeting. With Halloween on a Friday night and the World Series on Saturday, seeing an incredible win for the Dodgers already spelled trouble for this weekend. October has not seen such a poor box office run since 1997, with the exception of 2020. In 1997, 385 million people were not adjusted for inflation, while in 2025, 425 million people were recorded, resulting in a monthly total. With such a critical month crippled by underperformance, November can’t come soon enough for studios.
