During the panel at NYCC 27‘ for Whalefall, the cast is brought up on stage by Josh Horowitz (Junketeers, Zombieland: Double Tap), host of Happy Sad Confused. The author of the film comes out with the rest of the cast to give more insight into the film itself. The cast on the stage included Austin Abrams (Resident Evil, Weapons), Josh Brolin (The Goonies, Deadpool 2), Director/co-screenwriter/producer Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You, Love and Monsters) and author/co-screenwriter Daniel Kraus. While all seated, they spoke about being at Comic-Con and seeing so many fans excited for the film, which led to them speaking about who would actually survive a whale attack. unanimous Abrams was stated to be the lone survivor.
Kraus explained how the inspiration behind Whalefall began with a video of someone being swallowed by a whale. This led the author to contact scientists to understand what could realistically happen to a person inside a whale’s stomach. That research became a defining part of the story, grounding its terrifying premise in scientific and biological realities, which led to the creation of the novel. The title also carries a deeper meaning, referring to the decomposition of a whale after its death and the ecosystem that forms around its remains. This natural process connects the film’s themes of death, survival, and how death can sustain life for generations.
The sneak peek at the film showcased just how emotional, overwhelming and physically intense the experience will be. The sound design and striking visuals brought the dangers of being trapped inside a whale to life, creating a deep sense of claustrophobia. The pressure felt tangible, while the fear in the characters’ eyes made their struggle for survival even more unsettling. The visuals also offered a fascinating glimpse inside the whale, revealing the strange creatures and biological details that could exist within its body. Knowing the fact that everything on set was mostly practical effects really shows the lengths they went to bring this film to life.
Whalefall will premiere on the big screen on October 16.
