New information about the next Star Trek film has been unveiled. During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, screenwriters Johnathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley shared new details surrounding their upcoming movie that Paramount just confirmed at CinemaCon in April. Until now, not much was known about the next installment of the sci-fi franchise, only that it was to start a “new era for the franchise.” At the SDCC’s Directors on Directing panel, Goldstein and Daley set the timeline for the new Star Trek, all the while expressing their excitement about the project, stating,
John Francis Daley: [It’s] in progress, and…we’re very excited about it. I think people will be surprised. I really can’t say anything other than that.
Johnathan Goldstein: What draws us to it is the opportunity to do a different spin on something that you’ve seen done before, and that’s our hope with this is to satisfy the fans but also bring people in who may not consider themselves lovers of Star Trek and surprise them.
Goldstein teased about the new characters that will be introduced in the upcoming film as well as the timeline, saying,
It won’t be the characters that you’ve seen previously in your Star Trek movies. So, there’ll be a new sort of take on that, and I think it’ll probably be a little further into the future than we’ve been before.
It has been a decade since Star Trek has been on the big screen, with its last feature-length film being 2016’s Star Trek Beyond starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. In those years, the franchise has expanded its universe via television, with multiple TV shows including Star Trek: Discovery (2017-2024), Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022-), and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy (2026-). It will be interesting to see how Goldstein and Daley put their own spin on the feature and if it makes both Star Trek fans and general moviegoers happy.
