The box office report is upon us once again and is thankfully this time a little bit better for studios, though not as good as many were hoping for, or at least what Paramount was hoping for. This weekend’s box office crown goes to a surprising upset with Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, the third film in the Now You See Me newly minted official franchise from Lionsgate, absolutely crushing the competition that was the other newcomer this week.
The much-anticipated The Running Man remake of the 1987 film of the same name, based on the 1982 book by media giant Stephen King. Directed by Edgar Wright and starring Glen Powell as a contestant on a dystopian reality television show of the same name that puts the man in a race against time to the finish and absolute death for the entertainment of the masses. This has been Powell’s first box office misfire since reaching A-list status. What wasn’t an intentional gamble by Paramount turned into a loss as Predator: Badlands from the 20th century and Disney absolutely hogged audiences in its second outing, commanding most of the Running Man’s target demographic of young males after a franchise-best opening week. This division of having two gritty action films cleared the way for an overwhelmingly female-dominating audience to push Now You See Me 3 into the stratosphere, as overseas it netted a whopping $54.2 million for a global opening finish of $75.5 million.
Running Man was originally projected to be in the $24 million-$25 million ballpark, but Paramount was hedging closer to a $20 million opening. Running Man finished second in its opening week with $17 million. It’s brutal competition Predator: Badlands took third with $13 million. Fourth went to the Colleen Hoover adaptation, Regretting You, with $5 million in its fourth week. Fifth place went to Black Phone 2 in its fifth week with $2.65 million.
In the lower half of the top 10, the most notable entry is number six with the Keeper from Osgood Perkins and Neon, which performed much weaker than they had been hoping for, especially after the success that was Longlegs last year.
Seventh went to Nuremberg in its sophomore outing with $2.43 million. Eighth went to Sarah’s Oil, also in its sophomore outing, with $2.34 million. Ninth went to Bugonia with $1.6 million in its fourth week. Tenth for its final top ten appearance is Chainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arc with $1.6 million.
