Nicolas Cage is getting us accustomed to crazier movies each time. His last few years have been bizarre, indeed, between Mandy, Color Out of Space and the recently released Pig, but now he seems ready to outdo himself. So much so, as not to dare to watch his next film.
The movie in question is titled The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and it’s been few months since Cage wrapped filming along with his co-stars, no less than Neil Patrick Harris, Pedro Pascal and Tiffany Haddish. A film slated for release in April 2022 and Cage has promised he will never watch: “I’m never going to see that movie. I’m told it’s a good movie. I’m told the audience loved the movie. But it’s just too much of a whacked-out trip for me to go to a movie theater and watch me play Tom Gormican’s highly-neurotic, anxiety-ridden version of me.”
The Face/Off actor will portray a character based on himself that tries to get a role in the next Quentin Tarantino movie. However, good old Cage (the fictional one) will end up immersed in a convoluted plot in order to pay off his debts: a billionaire who pays him a million dollars for attending his birthday parties turns out to be a super dangerous drug lord. The CIA will intervene after this drug lord kidnaps the daughter of a candidate for the presidency of Mexico, and will ask Nicolas Cage to help in the rescue.
Beyond the crazy plot, Cage has confessed that it was Tom Gormican’s direction (That Awkward Moment) that ended up turning him into that version of himself that he wanted to avoid: “He kept pushing me in that direction. I said ‘Tom, that’s not really me. I’m really [made of] quiet, meditative, thoughtful moments. I’m not this neurotic, high-strung, anxiety-ridden guy all the time.’ But he said, ‘well, neurotic Cage is the best Cage.’ I said, ‘okay, okay. Let’s go, man. I’ll do what you want.’ I won’t see it. But I do hope you enjoy it,” Cage confessed to Collider.
