James Gray’s (Ad Astra) Paper Tiger will premiere at the 2026 New York Film festival for the first time in North America. It originally premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year in May. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gray said,
To be very pretentious about it, the intention was to try to make a very classical drama. The bonds of the film are both marital and familial, father and mother and son, two brothers, mother and daughter — it’s about very elemental bonds of human relationships.
The movie will premiere opening night on September 25th and will star Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Miles Teller (Whiplash) and Scarlet Johansson (Marriage Story). In the same interview Johansson speaks on her character Hester Pearl,
I was like, ‘Oh, I know I can do this. I don’t necessarily know how I’m going to do it, but I know that there’s something here that I can do and that I can be additive.’ I liked the idea of Hester being feminine and soft and graceful because she has a lot of chutzpah inside her.
The movie is set in the 80’s and follows Teller and Johansson as Hester and Irwin Pearl as a family taking care of their two boys in New York. Irwin gets into a scheme with his brother, played by Adam Driver, that gets them involved with the Russian mob. The movie has yet to get a theatrical release as of now.
