Awards season is officially on its way to a close as the 2018 nominations for the Academy Awards were announced this morning. Motion capture aficionado Andy Serkis was joined by Girls Trip breakout Tiffany Haddish to announce all 24 categories.
Many of the usual suspects have turned up on the list, with Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water turning up the most nominations – a total of 13. Compared to the Golden Globes, there are definitely some key changes, particularly with Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) being nominated in the Best Director category over Martin McDonagh (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri).
The Lead Actor category is an exciting one, with legends like Gary Oldman, Denzel Washington, and Daniel Day-Lewis going up against up-and-comers Timothée Chalamet and Daniel Kaluuya, with a significant snub for James Franco and The Disaster Artist.
The Academy Awards airs on ABC on March 4 and will be hosted for the second year in a row by Jimmy Kimmel.
