‘Nomadland’ Dominates BAFTA Awards

At almost every major awards show or film festival this year, Nomadland has come out on top, and it looks like the BAFTA’s are no exception. Chloe Zhao’s acclaimed film took home the awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Cinematography.

The film stars Frances McDormand as a woman who embarks on a journey as a van-dwelling nomad after losing everything in the great recession. With her win, Zhao became the first woman of color to win the director award and only the second woman to win it in BAFTA history.

Other awards included Anthony Hopkins winning the leading actor award for his performance in The Father, which also won the best adapted screenplay award. Meanwhile, Emerald Fennell’s film, Promising Young Woman, took home the awards for outstanding British film and best original screenplay. Daniel Kaluuya won best supporting actor for his performance as Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah, Yuh-Jung Youn won for best supporting actress for her performance in Minari and Bukky Bakray was given the BAFTA rising star award for her performance in the British coming-of-age drama Rocks.

The BAFTAs were praised for this year’s awards being the most diverse in its history, with 16 out of 24 actors nominated coming from racial or ethnic minority backgrounds. Nomadland, which has 6 nominations for the upcoming Academy Awards under its belt, is currently available to stream for Hulu subscribers.
