The Hollywood Reporter reports on the production for a new film in the Alien franchise from director Fede Álvarez. This new film would be the seventh installment in the Alien franchise. Not much is known about the plot of the new film other than the possibility that it may be unconnected to the previous films.
The original Alien was a science-fiction horror movie that was released May 25th, 1979. The film follows a crew aboard a spaceship that landed on a mysterious planet. The crew find themselves having to fend off a mysterious alien creature. The unique property of this alien creature is how it lays eggs within the body of a person. This alien creature, known as the Xenomorph, is an icon of the science-fiction genre. The original Alien film jumpstarted the film career of Sigourney Weaver, as it was her first leading role in a film.
The success of this film spawned its many sequels. These sequels shifted the genre from horror to action. It is currently unknown ifÁlvarez’s Alien film will steer more towards action or horror. Álvarez is known for the horror genre, and is best known for his film Don’t Breathe. This new film will be released on Hulu, making this the first film in the Alien franchise to be released on a streaming service. Álvarez remarked how the streaming release comes with fewer restrictions, which will allow this film to be “closer to its genre roots.”
