Newcomer Michael Barbieri Joins ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

Some more casting news came in today for Marvel’s upcoming relaunch of the Spider-Man franchise. Michael Barbieri, a new discovery only 14-years of age, has been tapped for a supporting part for next year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. The young actor will portray classmate and friend to Peter Parker (Tom Holland, who made a winning debut in Captain America: Civil War). Jon Watts (Cop Car) is directing from a screenplay by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein.

It looks like Barbieri’s role will be one original to the film and not one with comic book roots, however his casting certainly suggests that Homecoming will have a younger feel than earlier screen Spider-Man iterations. The young actor joins the already cast Zendaya, Tony Revolori (Dope) and Laura Harrier (4th Man Out). Oscar winner Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler) will portray Aunt May and Robert Downey Jr. will also factor in as Tony Stark; Michael Keaton will also be a part of the fun, portraying an as of yet unspecified villain.

The casting of Barbieri adds to an ever-expanding resume for the young actor. He made his screen debut in Ira Sach’s upcoming film Little Men, which earned favorable reviews after world premiering at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival; the film stars Greg Kinnear and Jennifer Ehle. He is also currently filming the anticipated Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower, appearing on screen opposite heavyweights Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will open in theaters on July 7, 2017.
