Coralie Fargeat wrote and directed the horror film Revenge, which was screened at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and will be coming to theaters in few days. The first trailer for the film, released on March 30, introduces the protagonist, Jen (Matilda Lutz), as a survivor of rape and attempted murder at the hands of a group of three men.
After recuperating in a desert cave from life-threatening injuries, Jen – as American Mary’s Mary Mason and many other revenge movie protagonists before her have done – seeks vengeance on the men who nearly killed her. Many people on the internet didn’t seem to like this trailer, however.
The follow-up trailer, the “Actual Male Comments” trailer, showcases scenes of Jen fighting back against her almost-murderers interspersed with comments made by male YouTube users on the first trailer. The comments range from the “women belong in the kitchen” joke that seems to be an internet favorite to complaints about women appearing in movies and in power in the world. The end of the trailer shows the words COMING FOR THE HATERS in neon letters.
You can catch Revenge in theaters on May 11.
