New Updates on the ‘Avatar’ Sequels

After a historic, box office-breaking emergence in 2009, James Cameron’s Avatar veered out of immediate cultural consciousness in the eight years following its release. However, it looks like it won’t remain out of the public eye for long. In the next few years, 20th Century Fox will be rolling out a total of four standalone sequels to the first Avatar film.

Cameron will be directing each of the films, which will each have their own compact, epic-style  story, with an emphasis on the Sully family. Essentially the films will all be carefully interconnected to create a larger narrative for the world of Pandora and its inhabitants.

Currently, it appears that Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy) will be acting in the film, along with her other costars, Sigourney Weaver (Alien) and Sam Worthington (Hacksaw Ridge). Additionally, Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones) and Cliff Curtis (Fear the Walking Dead) will also be signing on.

More than half of the original film was composed using CGI. It will be interesting to see how the years have improved the already groundbreaking technology and how it will influence the Pandora that viewers will see on screen.

For those who are already staking out their seats at the theater, Avatar 2 will come out on December 18, 2020 (exactly eleven years after the first film was released). Avatar 3 will follow it on December 17, 2021. While there will be no Avatar film in 2022 or 2023, Avatar 4 will return on December 20, 2024 and the films will conclude with Avatar 5 on December 19, 2025. Production should begin in the fall.
