New trailers for what are expected to be two of the summer’s biggest films were out yesterday. First, the new spot for Man of Steel struck a decidedly different tone. While previous trailers focused closely on Clark Kent and his transition into Superman, this one focuses on General Zod, played by Michael Shannon. Check it out:
Man of Steel is widely considered a test balloon for a potential Justice League movie, and while the Christopher Nolan/Christian Bale Batman probably wouldn’t cross over into a wider, Marvel-like movie continuity, it’s likely Henry Cavill’s Superman would. One thing is for sure after this trailer, though: this is going to be a very full movie. After what appears to be a fairly lengthy origins story, Superman is definitely going to have his hands full with Zod and his minions, some of whom we have not seen until this trailer.
Yesterday also brought a new trailer for The Lone Ranger, which continues to look like Pirates of the Caribbean transported a couple centuries forward and a few hundred miles west. Not exactly surprising when you consider that The Lone Ranger comes via the same director (Gore Verbinski), writers (Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio), and producer (Jerry Bruckheimer as Pirates, and again features Johnny Depp as a quirky co-lead.
The new trailer doesn’t show much that’s new, or at least not much that’s vastly different, as compared to previous ones (although I don’t remember Helena Bonham Carter’s particular choice of footwear being in evidence before), but it still looks like it has the potential to be a fun romp.
