New Trailer for ‘Jupiter Ascending’

The latest trailer for Jupiter Ascending hit the web today.  The film, an original fantasy movie, comes from Andy and Lana Washowski.  The film has a fantastical premise, one of a future world where an unwitting woman becomes targeted because of a birthright she never knew existed and a genetically engineered soldier who comes to her aid. A natural fit to the Washowski’s bold canvas of filmmaking– the The Matrix films, and the enigmatic science fiction mystery Cloud Atlas.

Jupiter Ascending stars Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis in the lead roles and is littered with an interesting collection of supporting players like Sean Bean (Game of Thrones), Douglas Booth (Noah), Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables), filmmaker Terry Gilliam and Cloud Atlas co-stars James D’Arcy and Doona Bae.  It marks an interesting point in the direction of Washowski’s career– they wrote as well as directed Jupiter Ascending— especially considering the film’s equally epic-sized ambition in comparison to Cloud Atlas, which was considered a commercial and critical failure when it opened in theaters in 2012.  That film did decent business internationally, but it makes one pause at the prospect of future big-budget filmmaking.

Whatever the case will be, we don’t have too much longer to wait.  Jupiter Ascending will hit theaters on July 18th, opening against Disney’s Planes: Fire and Rescue and Universal’s The Purge: Anarchy.  It will mark Tatum’s second big summer movie of 2014 as he is also starring in Sony’s 22 Jump Street.
