Sony Pictures Classic has released the teaser for Freud’s Last Session, directed by Matthew Brown, known for The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015) and Ropewalk (2000). The screenplay is written by Mark St. Germain, who wrote and directed a stage play of the same name based on the book The Question of God written by Armand Nicholi.
The film stars Oscar Winner Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs, Armageddon Time, The Two Popes) as Sigmund Freud, alongside Emmy nominee Matthew Goode (The Imitation Game, Leap Year, Downton Abbey) as C.S. Lewis. The film is set in 1939 England during the onset of World War II, two days after Hitler invaded Poland. After fleeing Vienna, Freud meets Oxford theologist C.S. Lewis, and together, the two explore the paradox of religion and science, faith and reason. Freud is dealing with cancer that will lead to his death and confronting questions we are all presented with at the end of our lives.
This film was deeply personal to director Matthew Brown and lead actor Anthony Hopkins. Brown said in an article with Vanity Fair, “We went back and forth about his seeing this in more personal terms…. It was more of a larger encompassing personal journey that was remarkable to watch.”
Freud’s Last Session was the official selection for the 2022 AFI Film Festival and is set to be released in theaters on December 22, 2023
